The Ahmed Hassan Al Malki Al Jehani-owned TARRAFAL (SHAMARDAL-CAPE VERDI) was a resolute winner of the Late Abdulaziz Al Fuhaid Cup, a Class 4 Thoroughbred Handicap for horses rated 65 to 85, which featured the 38th day’s races on the sand track of the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC) on Wednesday, March 16. The five-year-old bay colt TARRAFAL came through with a sustained run in the final furlong and then stretched away to win in fine fashion. Jockey Gaetan Faucon was astride the winner. STEVIE’S WONDER and TRYANCY were second and third respectively.
Al Shaqab Racing’s THAHAB (DUBAWI-MISE) put in a scintillating performance while smashing the opposition in the Class 2 Thoroughbred Conditions race run over six furlongs. The Jassim Mohammed Ghazali-trained THAHAB (Adrie de Vries astride) raced a handy fourth before essaying his challenge in the home stretch. Once Dutchman de Vries gave the marching orders to THAHAB, the DUBAWI progeny galloped on resolutely to win with a measure of comfort from VICTORY LAUREL and LUPIE.
The Sheikh Faisal Bin Hamad Bin Jassim Al Thani-owned TOPSY TURVY (PIVOTAL-HELTER HELTER) shed his maiden status with a hard fought victory over CHARME SECRET in the Class 6 Thoroughbred Maiden Plate. The Ibrahim Al Malki-schooled TOPSY TURVY (Evert Phieffer up) chased CHARME SECRET all the way into the straight and stronger at the finish to win by one and a quarter lengths, clocking one minute 23.89 seconds for the seven-furlong trip. GATHURST and KING OF DUBAI completed the frame.
Hassan Ali Hassan Al Matwi’s LOLITA DU PANJSHIR (MAJD AL ARAB-FARAH DU PANJSHIR) kept at bay the challenge of Al Shahania Stud’s RAWAA to take the top honours in the Purebred Arabian Maiden Plate for Fillies and Mares. Umm Qarn’s MAGIE D’EAU was on a start to finish mission, but failed to sustain her dominance. With a furlong to go, RAWAA and LOLITA DU PANJSHIR, surged ahead along the rails. The perseverance of Qatari jockey Faleh Bughanaim astride LOLITA DU PANJSHIR, enabled Al Matwi’s trainee to finish with a flourish along the rails and hold off the spirited bid of RAWAA. MAGIE D’EAU stayed on to take the third place ahead of ABEAH.
Injaaz Stud’s POLARIS (PIVOTAL-SAYING) broke through the maiden ranks with a pillar to post victory in the Class 6 Thoroughbred Maiden Plate, run over 1,200 metres. The Jassim Mohammed Ghazali-saddled POLARIS (Alberto Sanna up) quickly took charge of the proceedings and made every post a winning one to romp home to his first win in eight starts. IZGHAWA and ATLANTIC SEA were in futile chase of the winner and had to settle for second and third places respectively.
Injaaz Stud had a double for the day with the thrilling victory of MARJ EYOUN (AF ALBAHAR-AL MASSA) which prevailed by a whisker over SHMOOS in the Purebred Arabian Handicap for horses rated 80 and below. Osama Omar Al Dhafa’s SHMOOS put in a gallant display before going down bravely at the post. Jockey Sanna gave a brilliant ride on the Mohammed Jassim Ghazali-saddled MARJ EYOUN to record a back to back double for the day. AL QASSAM was third ahead of LINA AL MELS.
Qatari jockey Yousef Al Hajri was magnificent on the saddle while steering Al Jasra Stud’s STAR DEAL (ELUSIVE CITY-CIRIZIA VEGAS) to an exciting start to finish victory in the Class 2 Thoroughbred Handicap for horses rated 80 to 100. Though Al Ghazali Stud’s UPHOLLAND (Richard Mullen up) flashed on the scene with a late rally, the Qatari rider rode out STAR DEAL with vigour to stave off the challenge. CRAFTED and MAN AMONGST MEN were third and fourth.
