Radwanska, Navarro, march on as Vesnina shocks Wozniacki


DOHA, February 25, 2016-Polish tennis queen Agnieszka Radwanska on Wednesday stormed into the quarterfinals at the Qatar Total Open with an impressive win over Monica Niculescu of Romania.

Radwanska, seeded third, won 7-5, 6-1 in 1 hour 42 minutes on the Centre Court.

But there was no good news on Wednesday for former world number one Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark.

Russia’s Elena Vesnina – who came through into the main draw as a qualifier – on Wednesday beat Wozniacki 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 in 2 hours 37 minutes.

Earlier on Wednesday, Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro crushed Switzerland’s Timea Bacsinszky in straight sets to advance to the quarter-finals of the seven-day tournament.

Also on Wednesday, Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko shocked fifth seed and two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic to reach the last eight of the tournament.

Ostapenko, who is 18 years old, won 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.

The Latvian said: “I feel really great that I could play like this. It was one of my best matches. It was really great and I’m really happy.”

In another enterprising clash on Wednesday, Saisai Zheng of China beat Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard 7-6 (7-1), 6-1.

Zheng on Tuesday beat Germany’s Angelique Kerber, the top seed and the reigning Australian Open champion.
