DOHA, February 26, 2016-Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko on Thursday crushed giant-killer Saisai Zheng of China to reach the semifinals of the Qatar Total Open.
Ostapenko, who has only won a little over US $ 293,000 in career prize money, on Thursday won 6-4, 6-3 in 97 minutes.
“It was a great match today against Saisai. Both of us played good, so I enjoyed it. I try to stay consistent and I fight for every point,” Ostapenko said.
“Before the match, I was fine. But during the match when I was leading in the score, then it went 3-0 to 3-All, I was a bit nervous. Then I just tried to stay consistent and play my game. My mood is changing all the time. But most of the time, I’m happy,” Ostapenko added.
The 18-year-old beat Zheng who had toppled top seed and the reigning Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber of Germany on Monday.
On Wednesday, Zheng had beaten rising Canadian star Eugenie Bouchard.
In the second match on Thursday, 8th seed Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain also reached the last-four of the event with a straight-set win over Russia’s Elena Vesnina.
Navarro won 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) in 1 hour 43 minutes on the Centre Court.
In the third match of the day, Andrea Petkovic of Germany beat Garbine Muguruza of Spain. Petkovic won 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 in 2 hours 21 minutes.
