Portland, March 21, 2016-Star Qatari sprinter Abdalelah Haroun made his country proud in Portland after clinching the silver medal in the 400m at the World Indoor Athletics Championships.
Haroun, 19 who clinched the gold medal at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Doha last month, maintained his form on the big stage and recorded a time of 45.59 to seal podium finish for Qatar.
Reigning champion Pavel Maslak of the Czech Republic won the title while Deon Lendore of Trinidad and Tobago won bronze.
Besides Haroun, Olympic medallist, Mutaz Barshim also displayed an impressive show in the high jump contest, securing fourth position.
Barshim who also won the gold last month in Doha took a leap of 2.29m for a good finish. Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi won the contest with a jump of 2.36m at the Oregon Convention Center. Britain’s Robbie Grabarz finished with silver after a best jump of 2.33m. Erick Kynard of the United States took the bronze in the event.
Qatar’s middle-distance runner, Musaeb Abdulrahman Balla also made his presence felt at the top level, claiming fifth position in the 800m after recording a time of 1:48:3.
Boris Berian of the United States clinched the title in 1 min 45.83sec, ahead of Burundi’s Antoine Gekeme and compatriot Erik Sowinksi who took bronze.
The win was the biggest of 23-year-old Berian’s unusual career in the sport.
