DOHA, February 25, 2016 – The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) in collaboration with the Qatar Sailing and Marine Sports Federation (QSSMF) are preparing to organize the competitions of the annual traditional boat race “ Shawaheef” at the Katara Beach on Friday.
The race organizers held a pre-event meeting on Tuesday at the QOC Losail conference Hall attended by Mr. Mohammed Essa Al Fadalah, Director of QOC’s Public Relations Department, Hassan Abdullah Mohsen, Head of Technical Committee and Assistant Secretary General of Qatar Sailing and Marine Sports Federation (QSMSF), Waleed El Khanji, Head of sport evens unit and Ishaq El Hashimi, Head of Sport Activities and events.
At Tuesday’s productive meeting, the event’s draw ceremony was conducted where the ten participating teams are distributed into lanes , including Al Zubara, Al Dhakiara, Umm Al Hawol, Al Nof, Laffan, Al Garyyan, Al Waab, Musheirb, A l Oqdah and Al Rayyan.
Mr. Mohammed Essa Al Fadalah, director of QOC’s Public Relations Department gave a brief summary on the championship’s rules and regulations, likewise Mr. Hassan Abdullah Mohsen highlighted the procedures of the three kilometer long race.
QOC has allocated valuable prize money for top winners, where the first place will get QR 600.000, runners-up receives QR 400.000, third place winners will take QR 300.000 and fourth place winner will collect QR 200.000.
QOC is organizing this marine sport event in effort to revive rowing sport , identifying locals with this traditional sport as well as to establish a Qatari team will represent the country at both the regional and international competitions.
